Adventures with SJ – thrifting + flower picking

4 min read

SJ didn’t go to nursery today as a lot of the staff were off sick. Due to various bugs her and I have spent quite few mornings together recently. However, due to being ill we couldn’t really leave the house much.

I started to feel a bit cooped up and cabin-feverish so decided that today we wouldn’t spend the morning at home playing and doing chores. Instead, a planned a little adventure.

First stop: the charity shop

Calling going to a charity shop an adventure is maybe a bit of a stretch . However, for my toddler it was pretty exciting. (And it’s quite adventurous as a mum to take your 19 month old to a place where there’s lots of items of glass placed at her eye level.)

We found some good treasures: a bunch of sand toys, a bouncy ball, socks, a bottle and two wooden puzzles. And all that for just 9 Euro! I love charity shops.

It’s also really easy to take a risk on a new toy. If I spend 2 Euro on something SJ won’t play with much, it’s not the end of the world. We just bring the toy back and I donated money to charity. You can’t loose really!

Adventure part two: High street encounters

After we finished thrifting we went to a grocery store. Outside we met a homeless lady. SJ instantly befriended her dog and we ended up buying her a slice of pizza and a coke.

Most of the time when I see a homeless person I give them money and smile. Despite working for a homeless charity (in the communications department) I have never interacted much with someone who lives on the streets. It was quite humbling to see how overjoyed the lady was by our small gift.

Being able to be generous in that situation gave me even more joy than making a bargain at the charity shop. At this stage in our lives we are very often the recipients of generosity and it was such a nice experience to be generous myself.

(I am not sharing this to toot my own horn. The whole interaction was mostly SJs doing. It just was quite a memorable moment for me.)

Third and final stop: Flower field

On the drive home we passed a tulip field. SJ was quite restless in the car so it was a good moment to stop.

We picked up a bunch of tulips and enjoyed the wind and sunshine.

Then it was time to go home and nap. And so the adventures of SJ and me ended for this day. The end.
