Goal Setting

My 2023 goals

5 min read

Early in January I set a bunch of goals for the year. Normally, I share them here as well but lack of habit and a busy life kept me from doing so thus far. So, even though we are nearing the end of February already, I still wanted to document my 2023 goals here.

Setting priorities for my 2023 goals

When setting goals I normally start off by looking at the different areas of my life. I write down different categories like health, family, hobbies and the like. I then think through each of them and ask myself questions such as: How satisfied am I in this area of my life? What is going well? Is there anything I would like to change?

This process helps me to distill down what I want or need to prioritise. I try to aim and set goals for each category, so that I don’t just end up with a long list of all the things I want to sew and knit. For me, goal setting is about being intentional. I don’t want my life to just happen to me. I want to take charge where possible and be a good stewart of the gifts and challenges that God has given me.

My 2023 goals

So here’s what I came up with for this year!

Read the Bible everyday.

Learning more about God’s word is very important to me. I believe that God speaks to us through the Bible. Since becoming a mother, I have found it a lot more difficult to stick with daily habits, like Bible reading our journaling. However, I am so much happier when I do! Hence why this is part of my 2023 goals. Right now, I just read a few verses each morning. I use a little book called “Losungen” – it is by a German publisher and they provide one verse from the old and one from the new testament each day. This is not much, but it is a start.

Organise SJs toys according to Montessori principles.

SJ is in a montessori nursery and in December I read “The Montessori Toddler” by Simone Davies. I love the philosophy behind Montessori and want to implement more of it in our home.

Reach out to a friend every week.

I have been pretty bad at keeping in touch with my friends or to be the one to initiate plans to hang out. I want my friends to know that they are important to me and that I value time with them. Relationships need time and I want to give it.

Publish one blog post every month.

Just because I love blogging. But the things I love and that are non-essential very often get put on the back burner. I want to at least give this passion of mine a little bit of attention each month.

Go to bed by 10:30 pm at least five nights a week.

SJ is the best in so many ways but she is keeping us awake at night A LOT. Despite being so so tired I have found myself going to bed very late most nights. After a full day of work and parenting the evenings are my “me-time” and I often want to pronlong them. However, I have realised that 3-4 hours of sleep every night are most definitely not enough. My chances of getting 5-6 hours increase significantly if I head to bed sooner.

Make time for creativity and making each week: knit, sew, play piano, spend time in the garden.

As said earlier, it is so easy to neglect ones hobbies in favour of doing laundry or dishes or cleaning the floor AGAIN. When I have time to make and create I am a happier person and much more fun to be around.

Read 42 books.

Last year I aimed for 50 but only managed 40. So I thought I will aim for 42 this year. As of today I have already read 13, so if I keep going at the same pace I might exceed this number! I LOVE reading but sometimes I have to make myself do it. And nothing motivates me more than the prospect of being able to check of a tick box. I am a nerd, I know.

Schedule a weekly admin hour to go through post, organise our budget and deal with paperwork.

Ugh, I know. Adulting, hey? My tendency is to put anything that lands in our letter box into a neat or not so neat pile somewhere and then just… leave it there forever. This behaviour causes my husband a lot of anxiety. So I am trying to get better at this and be a responsible grown up who puts their bank statements into a folder. To be honest, this is not purely for my husband. Last year I did my tax return on the very last possible day, having felt stressed and annoyed about it for about 10 months before. I am hoping to be a bit more organised in 2023.

Those are all my 2023 goals!

Have you set goals for the year? How is it going so far? I’d love to hear about what you prioritised this year.
