This week was so full with lots of fun things. I wanted to capture them here. Especially when life is full I find that I often have a hard time recalling what I did and how I felt. So here are a few snippets from a very eventful week!
Monday
This morning I did a big grocery shop and a bunch of housework. Including cleaning out the fridge. It was very satisfying filling a clean fridge with lots of fresh food! I also got a little bit of knitting time in.
In the afternoon one of SJs friends came to our house for a playdate. I painted some maccaroni pasta with them and when they had dried we strung them up as necklaces. It was quite a fun activity!
This week we have a small circus tent in our village park. Our local primary school is doing a project with some actual circus artists and they are putting on performances each afternoon. In the evening the tent is used for a varied program. And tonight my dad’s Jazzband – Jazzlong – performed here. It was such a good concert! I went with my brother and my oldest nephew and it was so lovely. Sometimes I can’t believe how quickly time goes by – it feels like yesterday when I held my nephew as a newborn and now he is 9 and can stay out past 8pm with us. Crazy.
The band played amazingly and the atmosphere was wonderful. It was such a special evening. I loved every minute of it.
Tuesday
I woke up feeling a bit funky today. So, I decided to do a bit of gardening before it got too hot to enjoy being outdoors. I weeded the plant beds and brought in a little bouquet of zinnias. It’s my first year growing flowers. Previously I saw it as a bit wasteful to grow anything other than vegetables but these flowers bring me such joy, they were worth every drop of water!
I then headed to our local charity shop to drop off a bunch of stuff. I also bought a bag full of things – of course! But a lot less than I had come with.
The girls and I spent the afternoon playing at home. SJ worked hard on her birthday invites. I prepared dinner and in the evening we had some good friends over for dinner and drinks on the balcony. It was extremely lovely.
Wednesday
I am so insanely grateful for my bike and trailer. Being able to drop off the girls in the morning with the bike just improves my quality of life so much. It was the most beautiful morning and I just felt so grateful to be alive, to experience summer, for the trees and this beautiful place we call home.
Back home, Edd and I did various admin tasks. I then did some housework and watered the plants.
In the afternoon Ls nursery celebrated a summer festival in the woods. It was such a lovely time. The staff had prepared a treasure hunt for the kids, they did some crafts, performed a song and there was lots of delicous food.
In the evening I had my online prayer small group. Tonight it was just me and one other friend but it was so nice to catch up and pray together.
Thursday
Another day, another beautiful cycle ride! Today I was headed to Basel to go to my friends house. We worked on the safeguarding policy for the kids ministry for our church together and also chattet lots about all sorts of things. I am so grateful for friendship. It was a productive morning and also very good for the soul.
The afternoon was also rather exciting! My nephews performed in a circus prodcution in our local park. It was SJs and Ls first time going to the circus and it was even more exciting for them to see their cousins in the circus arena.
By the time the performance had finished it was early evening and there was such a lovely atmosphere in the park. Lots of families milling around, the weather was perfect and further down there was a boule tournament and some live music. It felt kind of magical.
Friday
I dropped off the girls and then, once again, spent some time in the garden.
I did various chores and then spent the rest of the morning finishing off the invites for SJs birthday party. She had done all the colouring and cutting and I just needed to write the text with all the information for each child.
Edd and I then headed to Ls nursery for a parent teacher meeting. It was very interesting to hear how she is getting on at nursery, the things she is learning and who she loves to play with.
In the afternoon we headed to the girls gym class. It was the last session before the summer holidays and we had lots of fun despite the heat.
Back home we had dinner and then had to say goodbye to Edd, who flew to England tonight for a bit over a week to help lead at a youth conference.
Saturday
We had a relaxed Saturday morning, read books in bed and then had a late breakfast over at my parents house before going for a walk. We headed down to the river Rhine to sit by the water, throw stones and look out for ducks, swans and boats.
Back home I tried to get both girls to nap. SJ couldn’t fall asleep but she lay in her bed for 45 minutes listening to stories. During that time I knitted on a jumper that I am test-knitting for a designer. The design is beautiful but all over colourwork, so I am making slower progress than I had hoped. I also made a pasta salad.
We spent the afternoon playing and doing laundry. Then we headed to a party! Some friends of ours host an anual summer party and one of my dad’s bands was performing. The girls LOVED it. They are so proud of their granddad and really enjoy live music. SJ also spoke initiated lots of conversations with people she had never met before. Later, I told her that I was very impressed with how she just approached people she didn’t know. Her answer was: “Well Mama, parties are for having conversations with new people, aren’t they?”
We were home very late, had quick showers and then went to bed.
Sunday
I had hope that a late night would result in a later morning. That hope was in vain. Ha! L was awake at 6:15 am and SJ at 6:30 am. Needless to say, they were very tired and very cranky all day.
However, we managed to tidy and hoover the entire flat together. After that we rewarded ourselves with some TV time. We watched a nature documentary about frogs and some veggie tales.
We headed to my parents for lunch. After eating we met with my brother and nephew and went for a walk in the woods. It was quite a steep climb and the girls were not impressed. Ha!
In the evening my mum babysat them while I went for another beautiful bike ride to a castle nearby. I went there to see a play together with my best friend Simone. It was a beautiful evening. Outdoor theatre is just so wonderful.
