Lately, I’ve been thinking about hope. What am I hoping for? In who or what do I put my hope?
And I realised, that if I am honest, often I hope for an easy life. I hope that we will have safety and security and happiness.
Hope for eternity
When the Bible talks about hope, it usually means an expectation of God’s intervention. And very often, it encourages us to put our hope in Jesus and his return.
Jesus coming back feels incredibly abstract. Kind of like heaven. It’s hard to imagine and it’s a lifetime away. I don’t spend a lot of time hoping for Jesus’ return. I often hope that he will intervene now and help with today’s problems. Often he does. But not always.
I am then invited to put my hope in the promise that one day, he will. Jesus is going to right every wrong, wipe every tear, mend every broken heart. He will fix what we destroyed. He will bring justice and peace.
There is more to life
At the moment I keep having days where I feel incredibly happy or excited, but then almost always something happens to dampen my joy. Why can’t things just be good all around?
Even the happiest moments get tinged with the knowledge that they are only temporary. It’s so easy to lose hope in this life.
I want to remember more often that I have an eternal hope. Jesus is on the move. He will intervene today and forever. And one day, everything will be okay.
