Mother’s Day Pep Talk

2 min read

Yesterday it was Mother’s Day in England. In Germany we celebrate this occasion in May which is lucky because yesterday it was Edd’s birthday. It might have been difficult to celebrate both him and me on the same day, as we both like being in the centre of attention.

Anyhow, I wanted to still acknowledge Mother’s Day and show some appreciation for all the mums out there with a little pep talk. These are just some of the things I sometimes need to hear myself! Maybe they encourage you as well.

Happy Mother’s Day: A pep talk

My dear Mama friend,

Happy Mother’s Day! First of all: you are doing great. Maybe you don’t think you are, but you really do.

You are showing up, day after day. You get out of bed, probably not just in the morning but also in the middle of the night. Sometimes multiple times. You are a super hero.

There are so many emotions. Whether it’s toddler tantrums or teenage angst – it’s a lot. And then there’s your own feelings, too. Which sometimes seem to make everything worse. Be kind to yourself. Yes, the books tell you to always stay calm, but you are just a human being.

Remember, that it is all temporary. I don’t mean “cherish each moment, they never come back”, but rather, get through the night, the week, the month and things might be a little bit easier.

This might sound dramatic, but I believe mothering today is especially hard. There is no village to help you raise your kid, just Pinterest and Instagram to highlight all your failures and shortcomings. Worrying about your career, feeling guilty over not using cloth nappies, enforcing screentime limits and still needing to lose the babyweight is no easy burden.

Hence, you deserve a break. If you find yourself with any “free” time, don’t do the stupid dishes. Take a nap! Read a book! Call your friend! Go for a walk! I repeat: don’t do the dishes!

The work you do is important and valuable. The seeds you sow will grow. The love you give and give and give is shaping and nurturing these little, wonderful, annoying kids.

You are doing great, Mama. I am rooting for you.
